Hospitalist ServicesFrequently Asked Questions

What is a hospitalist?
A hospitalist is an experienced physician who specializes in the care of patients while they are in the hospital. Your primary care physician has elected to use the Hospitalist Service to manage your stay at Weatherford Regional Medical Center.

Why do I need a hospitalist?
Many physicians specialize in outpatient medicine and have very busy clinic practices. They may not be able to be available to patients in both settings. Hospitalists are physicians specializing in inpatient medicine. These physicians are responsible for managing the care of patients during their hospital stay. They will coordinate consultations with sub-specialists, order tests and procedures, and personally provide the patient with a consistently high level of care throughout the hospital stay. Hospitalists talk to primary care physicians on a frequent basis. At the time of your admission to the hospital, your primary care physician calls the hospitalist to inform him or her of your condition and sends over records to provide as much information as possible about your illness.  These hospitalists also provide information directly to your physician regarding the status of a patient while in the hospital.

Who will be my doctor while I’m in the hospital?
One of Weatherford’s hospitalists will be your physician while in the hospital. He or she will be fully responsible for your care while you are hospitalized.

What about my regular doctor?
The hospitalist does not replace your physician, but becomes a partner in your healthcare while you are hospitalized.

Does my family meet my hospital doctor?
Once you are in the hospital, your hospitalist will meet with you and your family to explain your treatment plan.

When can I return to my regular doctor?
Once you leave the hospital, you will return to the care of your regular doctor. Your hospitalist will share your medical record with your doctor.
